MWBE Support

The Pittsburgh Pirates recognize the good business sense and added value gained by doing business with minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs).

The directors of the Community Development and Purchasing Departments are dedicated to identifying qualified MWBEs who offer high-quality, cost-competitive goods and services, and matching them with the needs of the company.

The Community Development Director actively seeks MWBEs through trade shows, advertising in local and national media, and working with business and advocacy groups.

The Pirates are an active corporate member of several organizations that are dedicated to fostering minority business development, including the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council, the African American Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Diverse Business Partners Vendor Spotlight

Carol Philp, CPI Creative

The Pirates and Major League Baseball congratulate Carol Philp, President of CPI Creative, as a recipient of the second annual Jackie Robinson "MVDBP" (Most Valuable Diverse Business Partner) Award.

Carol claims that there really are some things in life that remain the same. The values that are found at the core of a winning team -- from B2B teams to sports teams -- it's all about trust and dedicated teamwork.

CPI Creative, an innovative marketing and promotional company, exudes great pride in solidifying relationships with clients such as MLB and their hometown team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Given a chance to share her story, Philp explains the value of certification as a woman- or minority-owned business.

"The benefits from our WBE certification have far exceeded our expectations," said Philp. These benefits range across the board from scholarships for educational purposes to tradeshow booths to showcase CPI Creative's design capability. Office Depot featured CPI Creative in a 20' x 20' tradeshow booth at the 2005 National WBENC Conference in Las Vegas.

This corporate support has created a platform for CPI Creative to be viewed on a national competitive playing field. Contracts with Lockheed Martin, MLB, The Pittsburgh Pirates, DuPont and Office Depot all were initiated through supplier diversity programs.

MLB's Diverse Business Partners provided CPI Creative the opportunity to design and manufacture the Inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic souvenir cup. These cups reflected this global event with "Baseball spoken here" graphically decorating the cups in seven different languages.

The success of this first project with Diverse Business Partners led to more opportunities for CPI Creative. As part of the diversity vendor team for the 2006 All-Star Game, it provided the leather-trimmed duffle bag as the gift for the Client Batting Practice.

As a full-service marketing and promotional product agency, CPI Creative works with each client as an extension of its marketing team. Its design, printing and extensive research capabilities support its flexibility, and its trusted domestic and overseas suppliers provide the foundation for the CPI Creative Competitive Pricing Structure.

It might be a press kit for the "2005 Bassmaster Classic" in a bass-shaped cooler bag or the underneath canopy of an umbrella filled with original Burton Morris artwork of Pittsburgh's corporate and cultural partners, but the commitment to excellence is unchanging.

CPI Creative has learned firsthand that there are many dedicated advocates in large corporations that are committed to the advancement of women- and minority-owned businesses.

"We are proud to have corporate partners not only as clients, but also as an excellent resource for our growth and development as a 'player' in the game of advertising and marketing," said Philp.

Oscar A. Worthy, Oscar's Ltd.

The Pittsburgh Pirates believe in supporting minority- and women-owned businesses. As our commitment to building relationships with minority- and women-owned suppliers has grown, so have the companies we do business with.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Diverse Business Partners Program looks for firms like Oscar's Ltd., quality minority- and women-owned companies that bring us a competitive edge. Using their products and services benefits us both, the minority- and women-owned firms get an opportunity to grow and succeed, and the Pirates receive quality products and services at a fair price. In short, everybody wins. One of those business owners is Oscar A. Worthy, President of Oscar's Ltd.

Oscar's Ltd. has been a vendor for the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club since 1992 and is considered one of the ballclub's preferred vendors. Worthy is president of Oscar's Ltd., a supplier of corporate gifts, advertising specialties and custom products. The 21-year-old African-American-owned firm -- known for the high quality of its products, its customer service, the extensive range of products, and its attention to detail -- provides custom items that address the marketing needs of the Pirates.

Oscar's Ltd. has supplied Major League Baseball with custom products as well. The company was granted a Major League Baseball license in 1994 to create a custom key ring and medallion to commemorate the 1994 All-Star Game held in Pittsburgh.

As a result of the Pirates nominating Oscar's Ltd. for the local Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council's Suppliers of the Year Award, Oscar's Ltd. went on to be recognized and honored as a recipient of the Regional Suppliers of the Year Award from the National Minority Supplier Development Council.

Worthy attributes his success to this principle, "Being in business for yourself has a lot of merit because it forces you to be a disciplinarian. It's about integrity and being a professional." The Pirates are very pleased with the relationship established with Oscar's Ltd. Together we are creating success.
