Cozart part of thrilling win in first home game
CINCINNATI -- The newest Reds shortstop, rookie Zack Cozart, spent his All-Star break back in Louisville, where he and his wife packed and moved their stuff to a new apartment in Cincinnati."My break wasn't really relaxing, but I got a place here and moved a bunch of stuff. Now it's time to relax and play," said Cozart, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville on July 7. Cozart, 25, began his career with a four-game hitting streak at Milwaukee, and he singled in his first at-bat Friday. He went on to enjoy a three-hit night, which included his first Major League RBI and a single in the ninth to set up Brandon Phillips' walk-off homer that downed the Cardinals, 6-5.
Cozart was excited for his first Reds home game at Great American Ball Park, where he had family and friends in attendance from his hometown of Memphis."I try to let my wife handle that stuff, but I'm going to have a lot of people here," Cozart said. "It's going to be exciting. I know my dad is coming up again. It's only seven hours. Not bad."
Reds sign Draft picks Rosa, Wright
CINCINNATI -- The Reds have signed a pair of high-round 2011 Draft choices over the last couple of days. That included second-round pick Gabriel Rosa, a high school outfielder from Puerto Rico, and fifth rounder Ryan Wright, a second baseman out of the University of Louisville.Since the June Draft, the Reds have signed 23 of their 50 picks and all but two of their first 14 picks. The most notable unsigned selection is first-round pick and pitcher Robert Stephenson. There has been little movement in talks with Stephenson to this point.
Since Brandon Phillips became the Reds' second baseman in 2006, he has been paired with 20 different shortstops in the middle infield. Zack Cozart is the 20th.The last five players to wear No. 2 for the Reds have been shortstops -- Felipe Lopez (2004-06), Royce Clayton (2006), Alex Gonzalez (2007-09), Orlando Cabrera (2010) and Cozart (2011).
