Bruce named NL Player of the Week
By Evan Drellich / MLB.com
The 24-year-old right fielder collected four home runs, 13 RBIs and 25 total bases last week -- all of them either the Majors' best mark or tied for the best mark -- while hitting .353 in seven games.
Bruce had four multihit games during the week, including a pair of three-hit performances. The week continued what has been a torrid May: He has 12 homers and 32 RBIs for the month entering Tuesday, and his 31 home runs since August 2010 are the most of anyone in the NL.
Already an established Major Leaguer, the 2005 first-round Draft pick is showing the talent that had him projected for superstardom for so long. On the season, he has 16 home runs, nine off the career-high mark he set a season ago. He finished with at least 21 homers in each of his three previous seasons in the Majors. With 43 RBIs, he is also on pace for his first 100-RBI season, and if the season were over today, his .294 average would also be a career high.
Bruce took home an NL weekly award once before, for the week of Oct. 3, 2010.
