Arroyo, Cordero struggle vs. Mudcats

Right-handers touched for 10 runs in five innings on Friday

at Zebulon, N.C.
Friday, April 3

Mudcats at the plate: Chris Heisey and Chris Valaika started the game with a pair of singles off Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, who then gave up a three-run home run to Yonder Alonso three batters later. Heisey and Valaika singled again in the third, this time riding on home on Juan Francisco's inside-the-park three-run homer. Francisco went deep again in the fourth, finishing with five RBIs. Heisey finished with three hits and Valaika went 4-for-5.

Reds at the plate: The Reds couldn't get much going at the dish until Chris Dickerson finally got the Reds on the board with a solo shot in the fifth inning. The Reds scored twice in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Jonny Gomes doubled in his first plate appearance and finished with an RBI and a run scored. Joey Votto walked twice.

Mudcats on the mound: Dallas Buck was sharp in his first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Buck struck out four in the first two innings, and allowed just one hit through the first four. He finished after five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out six and walking three.

Reds on the mound: Arroyo didn't have the final tuneup he was hoping for, allowing six runs on seven hits, including two homers, and two walks in three innings. Arroyo struck out four. Francisco Cordero allowed four runs (three earned) in two innings, including a home run. David Weathers pitched a perfect sixth.

Up next: The Reds travel to Dayton, Ohio, for their final exhibition game on Saturday against Minor League stars at 3:05 pm.m ET.
