Greg Garcia honored as Player of the Month, Lee Stoppelman as top pitcher
ST. LOUIS, Mo., September 4, 2013 - The St. Louis Cardinals announced infielder Greg Garcia and lefthanded reliever Lee Stoppelman as the organization's Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for August.
Garicia hit .368 in 28 games for the Memphis Redbirds (AAA) during August and had a .471 on-base percentage as he added 10 walks to his 32 hits during the month. He had six doubles, one triple and two home runs, while driving in 12, scoring 16 times and swiped six bases. The 24-year-old had 11 multi-hit games during August, including a 3-hit game at Iowa on August 24. Garcia had hits in 12 of his final 13 games down the stretch, including a nine-game hitting streak in which he batted .484 (15-31). A versatile infielder, Garcia played three positions during the month, starting 16 times at second base, nine at shortstop and three games at third base. Garcia was a seventh-round draft pick of the Cardinals in June 2010.
"Greg had a tremendous all-around month, showing significant improvement as he completed his first AAA season," noted Director of Minor League Operations, John Vuch. "Not only did he hit for average and reach base at a high rate, but he also ran the bases well and played solid defense at three different positions."
Missouri native Stoppelman went 1-0 in 12 August relief outings with just a 1.26 ERA between Double- A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. Eleven of his 12 appearances came with Springfield, where he allowed two runs in 13.1 IP (1.35 ERA) and had 10 scoreless games. Eight of his 12 games at Springfield were outings of 1.0 inning or more, including back-to-back games of 2.0 innings (8/6) where he struck out six batters and a 2.1 IP outing (8/8) when he fanned two. Stoppelman was promoted to Triple-A following his pitching performance on 8/28 (0.1 scoreless IP) at Springfield and made his Triple-A debut the next day on 8/29 with 1.0 scoreless inning. Stoppelman, 23, was drafted during the 2012 June Amateur Draft in the 24th round out of the University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg, Mo.), and began his 2013 campaign at High-A Palm Beach.
On Stoppelman, Vuch added, "Lee made remarkable progress to reach AAA in his first full professional season, and the success he had in August really was typical of his entire season. He's displayed the ability to effectively handle both lefty and righty hitters, while striking hitters out without sacrificing his command."
