Rain forces postponement of Mets-Braves tilt
Niese pushed to Sunday start, with Harvey getting seven days of rest
ATLANTA -- Saturday's game between the Mets and Braves was postponed due to rain, with no makeup date announced. The two teams will resume their series as scheduled Sunday afternoon at Turner Field.
The extra off-day may turn out to be a blessing for the Mets, who were considering ways to give Matt Harvey extra rest following his career-high 121-pitch effort last Monday. Left-hander Jon Niese will shift from Saturday to Sunday, pushing Harvey back to Tuesday against the White Sox.
With scheduled off-days last Thursday and this Monday, the Mets will be idle three times over a five-day span. As a result, Harvey will receive seven full days of rest between starts.
Atlanta also used the off-day to its advantage, skipping fifth starter Julio Teheran. Right-hander Tim Hudson will start Sunday's game in Teheran's place, putting his 15-10 career record against the Mets on the line.
The two teams announced Saturday's postponement early in the afternoon, with a steady rain falling on Atlanta all morning and more expected throughout the night. Local weather agencies issued flood warnings for the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Such disruptions are nothing new for the Mets, who had three games postponed due to wintry conditions earlier this year. The first of those postponements damaged their momentum coming off two consecutive strong wins in Minneapolis, just as the Mets are currently riding a two-game streak. Shortstop Ruben Tejada hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning Friday, after the Mets twice fought back from one-run deficits in the eighth and ninth innings.
The two teams have yet to announce makeup information, in what could create a scheduling snafu. The Mets have already lost multiple off-days in order to make up games in Minneapolis in Denver, flying into both cities for one day each later this season.
Fans holding paid tickets for Saturday's game can use their tickets for the makeup game on the date to be determined, or exchange them for any remaining Braves regular-season home game, subject to availability. Exchanges must be completed prior to the date of the rescheduled game. See braves.com/rainout for details.
