Cubs name 2B Logan Watkins, RHP Nick Struck Minor League player, Pitcher of the Month for June
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today named Double-A Tennessee second baseman Logan Watkins and Tennessee right-handed pitcher Nick Struck as the organization’s minor league player and pitcher of the month for June. The duo helped lead the Smokies to a 17-9 record in June, the top mark in the Southern League.
Watkins, 22, batted .352 (31-for-88) with three doubles, three triples, one home run and 11 RBI in 23 June contests for the Smokies, walking 15 times compared to 12 strikeouts. He recorded a .941 OPS, including a .452 on-base percentage and a .489 slugging mark. The left-handed batter had a season-high 13-game hitting streak, in which he batted .375 (21-for-57), from June 13-30.
Selected by Chicago in the 21st round of the 2008 Draft, Watkins is batting .266 (75-for-282) with seven doubles, six triples, four home runs and 28 RBI in 75 games for Tennessee this season. He owns a .298 batting average (62-for-208) against right-handed pitching and has a .307 average (31-for-101) with runners on base.
Struck, 22, was 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA (8 ER/29.1 IP) in five June starts, walking eight and striking out 23, while limiting the opponent to a .181 batting average (19-for-105). He allowed three or fewer runs in all five of his outings and recorded three quality starts. Struck enjoyed a four-game winning streak from June 8-26, producing a 1.90 ERA (5 ER/23.2 IP) during the run.
Struck, who was selected by the Cubs in the 39th round of the 2009 Draft, is 9-7 with a 3.64 ERA (38 ER/94.0 IP) in 17 starts for Tennessee this season. He leads the Southern League in victories and games started while his 94.0 innings pitched rank third. He has held batters to a .244 average (88-for-360), striking out 74 compared to 33 walks.
