Reds at the plate: Jay Bruce was 2-for-3 and hit a home run to right field with two outs in the second inning. With one out in the third, Ryan Hanigan also hit a homer to right field.

D-backs at the plate: Continuing his stellar spring, Conor Jackson was 3-for-3 with a double and RBI single. Jackson is 6-for-12 in games. Justin Upton was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the four-run top of the fifth. Chris Snyder hit a two-run single in that inning. Augie Ojeda added a two-run double in the top of the eighth.

Reds on the mound: It wasn't a good day for Opening Day starter Aaron Harang, who gave up three earned runs and four hits over 1 1/3 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Harang was scheduled to go three innings but reached his pitch count limit early. Francisco Cordero worked one perfect inning. Fifth starter candidate Matt Maloney did not duplicate his first stellar outing. This time, Maloney gave up four earned runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning, including Upton's home run.

D-backs on the mound: Fifth starter contender Billy Buckner gave up two earned runs and two hits over three innings. He walked one, struck out three and allowed two home runs. Juan Gutierrez followed with one scoreless inning, one walk and one strikeout. Bryan Shaw gave up one hit over one scoreless inning.

Worth noting: At shortstop, Stephen Drew robbed Jonny Gomes of a hit with a diving stop to his left and turned a 6-4-3 double play.

It's not often that this happens: during daily comparison of temperatures, Goodyear Ballpark announced it was 60 degrees and 65 degrees in Cincinnati.

Cactus League records: Reds 1-3; D-backs 2-5

Up next: Fifth starter candidate Mike Lincoln, who had a rough spring debut last week, will be back to start Wednesday's 3:05 p.m. ET/1:05 MT game vs. the Angels in Tempe. It will be another chance for 2009 first-round pick Mike Leake, who had a nice one-inning debut on Saturday. Leake is quite familiar with Tempe being a former star at Arizona State.

The D-backs travel to Glendale to take on the Dodgers on Wednesday with ace Dan Haren getting the starting nod. Tony Abreu and Augie Ojeda will start up the middle for the D-backs. Abreu, who is battling for the final spot in the roster, will start at shortstop. Look for catcher Chris Snyder to DH as manager A.J. Hinch tries to get his catchers some at-bats without having them go behind the plate.
