Phillips up for another Gold Glove

2008 Award winner thrived at second base for Reds in '09

11/09/09 1:34 PM EST

With a new World Series champion now crowned, Major League Baseball is poised to begin a two-week period in which it hands out awards for the 2009 season. Second baseman Brandon Phillips has the best chance of any Reds player to land a postseason honor, making a run for another Rawlings Gold Glove Award in the National League.

The NL Gold Glove Award winners will be announced on Wednesday, one day after the American League honorees are named.

Phillips, the NL's Gold Glove second baseman in 2008, had another strong year defensively and is expected to again get some consideration for the award. He finished the year with a .988 fielding percentage, tied for the fourth-best mark in the league.

After committing seven errors in '08, Phillips had just two more in 2009. Additionally, no second baseman in the league helped turn more double plays than Phillips, who was part of 100 twin-killings.

Phillips is seeking to become Cincinnati's first player to win consecutive Gold Glove Awards since second baseman Pokey Reese did so in 1999 and 2000.
