Sick Cueto scratched from Thursday start

Left-hander Maloney to get the call for Reds against Marlins

09/16/09 8:45 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto won't be able to make his Thursday starting assignment against the Marlins.

Cueto was feeling under the weather on Wednesday and was excused for the day. He was also allowed to skip the annual team photo session.

"We sent him home," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I doubt that he'll be better tomorrow. He might be, but he'll probably feel weak."

Left-hander Matt Maloney has been tabbed for the spot start.

Maloney last started for the Reds on Sept. 8 at Colorado and allowed one run over five innings in the best big league start of his brief career. The outing was stopped because of a blister on his middle finger.

The finger has improved enough that Maloney was able to throw on the side Tuesday without incident.

Cueto is 9-10 with a 4.41 ERA over 28 starts this season but has improved greatly since a stint on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. In his past three starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.76 ERA.
