Votto to undergo examination in Cincy

Slugger forced to leave Saturday's game with dizziness

05/17/09 4:37 PM ET

SAN DIEGO -- Joey Votto's bout with dizziness continues to perplex the first baseman.

The latest recurrence of the ailment came Saturday night when Votto had to be removed from the game in the fourth inning -- the second time in five days that the 25-year-old slugger was pulled from a contest.

After the team returns home following Sunday's contest, Votto will undergo further examination to determine what exactly is causing the problems. In the meantime, his unavailability leaves the team short-handed.

"We're trying to stay away from [using Votto]," Baker said. "He's going to go in [Monday] and get some tests done to see if we can figure out what's wrong."

Perhaps the most frustrating thing is not knowing the extent of the condition, or when to expect Votto to be ready to play regularly again.

"We don't know what to be concerned about, because we don't know what it is," Baker said. "We just don't know how concerned to be."

Baker knew it must be serious when Votto had to come out of the game again on Saturday.

"Something has got to be wrong for him not to play," Baker said. "To come out of the game like that, I mean, this guy is a gamer, big-time. There's nothing we can do about it until we get back home and run some tests and hope they find out what it is."
