CINCINNATI -- Josh Fogg had the look of a man who stepped into the octagon for an ultimate fighting match with the wrong dude.

"I'm feeling good besides the fact that my face is blown up," Fogg said.

The top of the Reds starting pitcher's mouth was swollen and stitched, the result from being hit in the face by a Joey Votto line drive during batting practice on Tuesday afternoon.

"It looked like Mike Tyson got him," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Maybe, but it was Fogg's next scheduled start on Friday vs. the Rockies that has been knocked out because of the incident. Edinson Volquez will move up one day to replace him and Homer Bailey will move up take Volquez's spot on Saturday. Sunday's starter has been listed as "TBA," which presumably could go to Fogg if he's feeling better. He is now scheduled to throw on the side on Friday.

"We were hoping to back everybody up a day with the off-day, especially Volquez to give him an extra day," Baker said. "It's not going to work now. Foggy isn't bad enough to DL, which we don't want to do. He was just hitting his stride."

Fogg is 2-2 with a 7.09 ERA in 14 games, including seven starts, but 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA over his last three starts since returning to the rotation on July 5.

During batting practice on Tuesday, Fogg was playing catch in shallow right field to prepare for his side bullpen session when Votto's liner nailed him.

"I was about to throw a ball and someone said, 'Heads up.' I turned and I should have turned the other way," Fogg said. "There are no broken bones. I have a chipped tooth and 30 stitches. I've had plenty of stitches in my life and plenty of scars from childhood. I've never been hit in the face with the ball."

It could have been much worse, of course, and Fogg was lucky. A teammate left Aaron Harang's T-shirt hanging on his locker that reads, "sorry about your face."

"I got dizzy a little but was never knocked out," Fogg said before shouting to teammates. "That's all Votto's got? That's as hard as he could hit it?"
