CINCINNATI -- Reds starting pitcher Josh Fogg was sent to the doctor Tuesday after being struck in the mouth by a line drive during batting practice.

Fogg was taken to medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek's office for X-rays and needed 30 stitches to repair a split upper lip. The ball that hit Fogg came off Joey Votto's bat.

The right-hander will be evaluated again on Wednesday. It's not clear yet whether Fogg would be able to make his next scheduled start on Friday vs. the Rockies. He is 2-2 with a 7.09 ERA in 14 games, including seven starts. He's been solid since returning to the rotation July 5, going 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA over his last three starts.

The Reds have limited options to replace Fogg if they had to. An easy choice would be to move Saturday's scheduled starter, Edinson Volquez, up one day. Because of Thursday's off-day, Volquez would still be working on regular rest. Top Triple-A Louisville starter Daryl Thompson is on the disabled list, as is lefty Matt Maloney.

In other injury news, Reds starter Aaron Harang (strained right forearm) made his first throws since going on the 15-day disabled list July 13. Harang played catch at distances of up to 70 feet. He had no complaints.

Reliever Jared Burton (strained right lat muscle) reported feeling better.

"Today was the best day I've had," Burton said. "It's a matter of gaining flexibility and getting the inflammation and knot out of that muscle."

Burton, who is eligible to be activated from the DL on Saturday, hoped to begin throwing in a couple of days.

Infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. (strained right hamstring) began a running program and had no complaints.

"I did eight to 10 sprints and built it up. It was a good day," Hairston said.

Hairston can be activated next Tuesday when the Reds are in Houston.
