CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn don't have the best batting averages, but Reds manager Dusty Baker doesn't plan on doing anything different with the two sluggers when it comes to filling out a lineup card.

Griffey's .236 average and Dunn's .230 average are the two worst of any active everyday starter. Only part-time catcher Paul Bako's (.213) is lower. But Griffey, the No. 3 hitter, and Dunn, the No. 5 hitter, are leading the way when it comes to on-base percentage, and for that reason, Baker isn't planning any changes.

"Their averages are low, but their on-base percentages are still high," Baker said. "Their on-base percentages are higher than some of the guys who are hitting. I know they can hit, but it also helps to get on base and put a pitcher in the stretch. That's the thing. Most starters don't like being in the stretch."

Only seldom-used Jolbert Carbrera, injured leadoff man Jerry Hairston Jr. and part-time catcher David Ross have a better on-base percentage than Dunn's .387. Jeff Keppinger and Edwin Encarnacion follow Dunn, but then there's Griffey with his .349 on-base percentage.

Dunn and Griffey are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, on the Reds in walks, though Dunn already has a team-high 101 strikeouts on the season. Griffey, whom Baker said has "earned" the No. 3 spot in the order, is fifth on the team with 61.

"I still wish their averages were higher," Baker said. "You want everything, but if you look around baseball, there's not a whole lot of everything. You're seeing a lot of low averages with some high production and a lot of strikeouts."

Pitching matchup
CIN: RHP Homer Bailey (0-3, 7.00 ERA)
Bailey will be making his second start in place of the injured Aaron Harang, who is on the disabled list with a strained forearm. Bailey pitched 5 2/3 innings in his last start against the Brewers on July 13, giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. He received a no-decision, but it was a far cry from his previous three starts -- all losses -- in early June when he struggled mightily and was sent back down to the Minor Leagues.

SD: RHP Josh Banks (2-4, 3.20 ERA)
Banks makes his first start since July 6, when he gave up three runs in six innings in a loss to Arizona. Banks is 0-4 with three no-decisions in his past seven starts, though he hasn't pitched poorly in every start. Banks has a 3.20 ERA, which is as high as his ERA has been since the Padres promoted him from Triple-A Portland in May. He did pitch an inning of relief on July 13 to stay fresh, allowing one run on two hits. Banks has never faced the Cardinals.
