Padres at the plate: Terrmel Sledge opened the game with a sharp single, and Jose Cruz Jr. followed with his fourth homer of the spring. Cruz added a sacrifice fly in the second. Back-to-back doubles from Todd Walker and Mike Cameron and an RBI single by Kevin Kouzmanoff gave the Padres a 5-4 lead in the fifth. Manny Alexander hit an RBI double in the sixth, and Juan Ciriaco hit an RBI double to tie the game at 7-7 in the seventh.
A's at the plate: Shortstop Bobby Crosby, who made his Cactus League debut Wednesday after a long rehab from a fractured vertebra in his lower back, went 2-for-2 with a long home run to left field. Designated hitter Mike Piazza erased San Diego's early lead with his third homer of the spring, a three-run shot to left-center field in the bottom of the first. Eric Chavez singled in two runs in the fifth, and Erubiel Durazo added an RBI single later in the frame. Non-roster infielder Donnie Murphy won the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.
Padres on the mound: Righty starter Justin Germano gave up three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one in two innings. Closer Trevor Hoffman pitched a scoreless seventh.
A's on the mound: Righty starter Dan Haren gave up six earned runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out six over five-plus innings. Closer Huston Street pitched a scoreless eighth.
Cactus League records: Padres 10-11-1; A's 12-10-1
Up next: A's righty Esteban Loaiza will face righty Brandon McCarthy of the host Rangers in a 1:05 p.m. PT start Saturday in Surprise. The Padres will split the squad Saturday, with righty Jake Peavy squaring off against lefty Chris Capuano of the visiting Brewers in Peoria while righty Mike Thompson takes on righty Micah Owings of the host Diamondbacks in Yuma.
