CINCINNATI -- The Reds have planned to welcome a new player to their roster. Stealing bases or throwing strikes won't be part of his job description. Hitting home with the fans will be.

This addition is the Reds' new mascot -- a spirited complement to Great American Ball Park, which opens next season. The mascot will officially be introduced to the public at 5 p.m. Friday, during the first day of Kahn's Redsfest 2002, the team's annual two-day fan festival at the Convention Center downtown.

Reds marketing director Cal Levy dryly offered a hint regarding the mascot's appearance: "He's red."

A contest will be held to name the new mascot, who will help the Pepsi Funatics and Mr. Red -- the team's traditional symbol -- entertain fans during games.

This year's Redsfest also will feature 39 players, ex-players, broadcasters and coaches who will sign autographs, pose for photographs and interact with fans in various activities -- such as Kids Press Conferences, which are a new Redsfest wrinkle, and performances of "Reds Jeopardy," simulating the popular television game show.

Also each day, announcer Marty Brennaman will conduct question-and-answer sessions about Great American Ball Park and farm director Tim Naehring will lead discussions about the organization's minor league and player development departments.

Hours for Redsfest are 4-10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for fans 12 and under.
