This Day in Baseball History:
December 23, 1975 > Arbitrator Peter Seitz declares veteran pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally free agents, signaling the end of baseball's ancient reserve clause. Under the new rules, all players are now eligible for free agency after six seasons of Major League service. Messersmith eventually signs with the Braves, while McNally simply retires.
