Comments |
| Hitting ability: | Owings has a good swing and
should have the chance to hit for average at the next level. He's short to the ball and uses the whole field
well. |
| Power: | He can apply force to his swing, but he
doesn't have a ton of strength, so he's got well below-average power, especially with wood. |
| Running speed: | Has above-average
speed. |
| Base running: | Steals some bases now, but it
probably won't be part of his game in the future. |
| Arm strength: | His arm plays OK now because he
plays a shallow shortstop, but on a bigger field, he may not have enough arm to stay at the position. |
| Fielding: | Not a natural defender at short, he
might be better suited to play second base. |
| Range: | His feet are just OK and he has some
trouble with balls in the hole. |
| Physical Description: | Owings has a small frame
with some wiry strength, kind of like a Kurt Stillwell type. |
| Medical Update: | Healthy. |
| Strengths: | Good makeup, knows how to play the
game. Some good hitting skills and he can run pretty well. |
| Weaknesses: | Below-average power and a lack of
fluid actions at short that might necessitate a move to second base. |
| Summary: | Owings plays shortstop for his high
school team, but that might not be his best defensive home as a pro, with a move to second perhaps on tap
because of his arm strength and range. On the other side of second, his hands will play fine and he could be an
offensive-minded second baseman who hits for average at the next level. He doesn't have much power, but he does use
the whole field well. He doesn't have a plus tool, but he's the type of player who, if you're patient with him,
will be better than the sum of his parts. |
