An unconventional delivery and uncanny control combined to make Quisenberry an unforgettable success. He was a favorite among his teammates, peers, media and fans alike. He was named Royals Pitcher of the Year four times and was also selected to three American League All-Star teams. His emergence in the bullpen was key to the Royals finally capturing their first American League pennant in 1980. Quisenberry won American League Fireman of the Year honors and led the league in saves five times, including a then record-setting 45 in 1983. His quick wit was as well-known as his signature submarine-style delivery.
