The RRSL is a noncompetitive, coed, character-building summer baseball league targeting at-risk kids ages 8-11. The camp provides FREE transportation, lunch, field trips, vision and medical screenings, as well as uniforms, hats and gloves that participants can keep at the conclusion of the camp. Field trips include a Reds game at Great American Ball Park and a trip to Champions Baseball Academy, an indoor baseball facility with past professional baseball players and current college players as instructors.
Participants meet twice weekly for six weeks and receive mentoring and learn basic baseball fundamentals from volunteer coaches. During every practice and game, the staff of trained coaches and volunteers will emphasize the "CI REDS" acronym: Cooperation, Integrity, Respect, Education, Determination and Spirit. Character-building exercises, coupled with baseball fundamentals, reinforce the character trait of each week.
More than 100 volunteer mentors and coaches are needed. Baseball or coaching experience is welcome but not necessary, and the commitment is limited to two days per week, three hours per day. Volunteers receive training before the program by Reds Hall of Famer and RRSL Commissioner George Foster, as well as other past Reds players. Volunteers will receive a coach's uniforms and hats, as well as lunch during each day.
