Field renovation has been an integral part of the outreach mission since the inception of the Reds Community Fund. To date, fields have been renovated, signs have been installed and red benches are in place in 64 locations. More than 100 fields will be renovated in 2007 in markets throughout Reds Country including Cincinnati, Louisville, Dayton, Sarasota, Northern Kentucky, Lexington, Columbus, Indianapolis, Huntington and Hamilton.
This comprehensive effort to improve the conditions of inner-city baseball fields in Greater Cincinnati and throughout Reds Country has become one of the defining features of the Community Fund.
Leveraging the resources and services of local government and recreation departments, the initiative has become a collaborative success, making baseball more accessible to coaches, parents and thousands of children.
Why Renovate Inner-City Baseball Fields?
Construction projects recognizing the Reds Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman and All-Star outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. highlight the upcoming field renovation season. In addition to improvements to 100 fields over the next several months, dugouts and a press box-style structure will be built at Juilfs Park in Anderson Township. The newly dedicated "Marty Brennaman Field" will be the jewel of the Anderson Township Little League and serve as a lasting reminder of Marty's contributions to youth baseball in our region.
Similarly, a field will be dedicated in the name of Ken Griffey Jr., one of the Community Fund's most generous supporters since its inception in 2002. "Ken Griffey Jr. Field at Weaver Park" in Cincinnati's West End neighborhood, featuring new dugouts and signage, will be a remodeled home to inner-city Knothole baseball and the Greater Cincinnati RBI program.
